Noise Reduction - PSP and PS

Here are the functions in PS (CS2) I found that seem to be similar to Islemann's PSP IX.

I've never used PSP IX but it's probably a better buy than PS.

Nice job matching the tweaks

It seems that the difference is the need to 'sharpen'.

I suspect PSP XI does it automatically, you added sharpness in CS2 manually.

Net result is the images look pretty darn close to eachother.

PSP XI is less than 25% of the cost of CS3 (CS2 is no longer available from Adobe).

doesn't most (all?) of this really depend on the monitor?

I was wondering about this earlier, but now that I've seen Terry's tweaks using two different versions of PS...

Doesn't resolution and clarity of one's computer screen make a lot of what is being discussed here more relative than usual? From my POV, the images tweaked with CS2 look overly done, too manipulated. For instance, the motox photo is taking on a painterly/other worldly look - not just sharper or more realistic. But I guess this all depends on what you're goal is?

I should hook up my mammoth tube screen so I can compare it with my new flat screen to compare and contrast...

How does one compensate for the range of monitor clarity/color?

monitor calibration

I've been able to use a little calibration tool that came with one of my earlier Adobe PS packages. It allows you to calibrate to the mumblydymumble standard. It's nice having all three monitors calibrated to the same color.

The process is actually fairly simple, you put a static cling mask on the center of the screen/display and then follow some basic instructions. If only I could find the darn thing...

A quick Googly and:

Those should help.

Favorite tools in PSP 9?

To the best of my recollection, PaintShopPro didn't use roman numerals for versions before Corel acquired Jasc. Then they followed version 9 (what I have) with "Paint Shop Pro X". then, the next version is "Paint Shop Pro Photo X1" and the current version is "Paint Shop Pro Photo X2". Wankers! Damed hard to tell how much is an improvement of what I've learend to use and like, and how much is repackaging and morphing into a whole different product.

Plus, these latest "Photo" versions install spyware called "PSIService" from a company other than Corel which is neither documented in their license agreement nor removed by their uninstaller. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paint_Shop_Pro

So I've been extremely reluctant to upgrade from PSP 9.

Michael, it sounds like you've used this product a lot. What are the tools you reach for on most photos? Terry's mentions "Light/Shadows"is Photoshop, is there a corresponding tool in PSP9?
