MonoPods, TriPods and GorillaPod

I have a monopod that I take almost EVERYwhere when I am shooting.

I have a tripod that I take almost NOwhere, cause it is heavy and kinda bulky.

I am looking at the GorillaPod SLR-Zoom.

Anybody ever use one of these or similar?

Any other suggestions?

Note that I am looking for something that will work with my 30D and 100-400 lens, so the smaller lighter weight tripods wont hold up.

It's hard to tell from the

It's hard to tell from the photos but that Gorilla pod thingie doesn't look a whole lot smaller/lighter than some regular tripods. I think the main advantage of the Gorilla pod is that you can quickly and easily tweak the camera position without having to loosen 12 different thumb screws, knobs, friction nuts and hand cranks.

well, you haven't seen my tripod

It is a manly beast.

I forget what my 30D, with battery grip and 100-400 (my heavist) lens weighs, but it is just over 3 kilos.

The tripod that I have is rated for 5 kilos to allow for "growth"

The tripod itself weighs just over 4 lbs. Add the ball head and it is freaking heavy.

It is rock solid though. I have had the 30d and the zoom lens deployed  in some pretty heavy winds and it didn't budge.

It is great to have for night shots and landscape or other long exposures. But it stays home most days

The gorilla pod will travel with me more than this beast does.
