The '06 R1200RT - "Leif the Lame" - The Journey Home (June 2006)

After selling the '03 Road Glide I set out to find a red R1200RT with ESA and no radio. I found one in Missoula, MT at Big Sky BMW (they sell KTM and Kawasaki, too). The deal was done and the accessories showed up so I cashed in some FF miles and flew one way to Missoula. The salesman picked me up at the airport (turns out there were two of us waiting there; we just didn't know it until he showed up). I took delivery and, as previously arranged, went out for a quick break-in ride. When I came back the shop changed the oil and filter while I had lunch. Then it was off to Coeur d'Alene, ID where I planned to stay over night and visit with my cousins (the only Wassermans in CdA). As soon as I left the Missoula area the rain started and didn't stop until after I arrived in CdA that night. The bike was a muddy mess. When it dawned sunny on Saturday morning I borrowed a car, bought some cleaning stuff, and washed and dried the bike for some pictures. It's never looked better!

The reason for the bike's name? At 3500 miles the final drive failed at the wheel attachment flange. At 12,000 miles a cylinder retaining stud stripped out during routine maintenance (probably failed at the 6,000 mile service). Leif may redeem himself in the future but right now he's a bit "Lame." Also this is the second bike to wear the OR "BMW NUT" plate.
