I'm adopting a rule told to me by a man who is wiser than he thinks he is. It goes something like this: if there is more than one way to interpret something I've said, please do so in the way that reflects your knowledge of me. If we're friends/family/lovers, interpret what I said with the overlay of "I like/love you and meant whatever I said in the kindest, most loving way, even if the words I used don't come out that way."
