Ingredients:1.5 c flour
1 c sugar
4 Tbsp baking cocoa
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
5 Tbsp vegetable oil
1 Tbsp vinegar
1 tsp vanilla
1 c lukewarm water
Preparation:Preheat oven to about 350F.

Mix/Sift/Whatever the dry ingredients together. I usually use very generous tablespoons of cocoa, and ungenerous teaspoons of salt. Works for me.

Make large, medium, and small indentations in the dry mixture and add the vegetable oil, vinegar and vanilla to their respective indentations.

Add lukewarm water and mix. Like a biscuit batter, don't mix too much.

Pour into a greased and floured 9" pan and bake for about 30 min (or until done).

Let cool (as long as you can resist) and eat.
Notes:It's dirt simple. I can be eating cake an hour after the impulse strikes. Yum. I think it's best still hot. My Mom, who taught me the recipe, thinks it's best the next day. Whatever. It's also easily amenable to doubling or abuse of just about any sort. It's hard to ruin.
