Ingredients:2 c flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar
1/4 tsp baking soda
1 Tbsp baking powder
5 Tbsp shortening (or half shortening half butter)
1 c buttermilk
Preparation:Preheat oven to 450 deg F (sorry, I dunno what the gas mark would be...)
Sift dry ingredients, then rub in the shortening/butter with your
hands. Make a well in the middle, pour the buttermilk into it,
and mix the flour into the buttermilk thoroughly. Knead it lightly
on a floured serface, pat it out to the thickness you like (1/2"?),
cut into rounds with a biscuit cutter or drinking glass (this can
be a pain if vacuum forms in the glass... flour the edges, it
helps). Set the biscuits into a greased pan so the edges touch,
bake 12-15 minutes.
